College Planning Workshops

The Seidler Foundation is offering free college planning workshops for high school senior and 1st-year college student scholarship awardees to further support college preparation and success.

90-minute Zoom workshops will be offered in both the fall and spring semesters and will include Q&A sessions featuring current college students who are JHS graduates.  

Students who attend one of each workshop topic offered during a semester will be entered into a drawing to receive a $100 Casey’s gift card.

Finding Your Best Fit College

Friday 2/13 10:00am-11:30am

Are you feeling overwhelmed with college choices?  This workshop provides a helpful guide to identifying which colleges are the best academic, social and financial match for you.  By learning how to research and compare college features like: program offerings, degree types, costs, location, size, and support systems you can narrow down a strong list of colleges where you’re likely to thrive and succeed. 

Which Major is a Fit for My Career?

Explore how college majors connect to different careers, how and when to choose or change your major, and where to find reliable tools for researching programs, degrees, and career paths.  This session will help you understand which majors align with your goals and how to navigate your options confidently.

Next Steps After Admission

Monday 3/30 – 10:00am – 11:30am

You’ve selected your college, been admitted and paid your deposit – now what’s next? This workshop will cover all of the important tasks you’ll need to complete before the first day of class, such as using your student portal, attending orientation, registering for classes,  preparing for life on campus, and meeting Seidler Foundation scholarship requirements.

Taking Care of Yourself in College

Thursday 4/30 12:00 – 1:30pm

Emotional/mental health is one of the most cited reasons for college students deciding to withdraw from school before completing their degree.  This workshop will share practical strategies for managing stress, staying balanced, and taking care of your physical and mental well being while in college.  We’ll identify common college stressors, healthy routines and how to find and use campus & community support systems.

Paying for College

An overview of college costs and how financial aid is calculated.  Topics include the FAFSA, the Student Aid Index (SAI), types of federal, state and institutional aid, and scholarships and how to apply for them.

Time Management

 An introduction to college time management and how it differs from high school.  The workshop will provide strategies for weekly planning around a class syllabus, prioritizing study time outside of the classroom, simple organization tools, and healthy ways to balance classes, work, and personal time.

Study Skills

A guide to developing successful college study habits and using campus supports.  Topics include: active study methods, strategies for communicating with professors and TAs, and using resources like instructor office hours, study groups, and on-campus tutoring and writing centers.
